CULTURAL ACTIVITIES 2006

The Embassy of Israel together with tararam, the SA Israel Culture Fund supported the following events during   2006

March 7 - 10 : Artscape Theatre, Cape Town

PLONTER, a political theatrical production by the Cameri Theatre in Tel Aviv performed as part of the Cape Town Festival.  Panel discussions were held after each performance.  The Cameri Theatre of Tel Aviv became the first Israeli theatre production to be performed in South Africa.

March 2, 9 & 16 : Durban City Hall, Durban 19h30

Maestro Omri Hadari, well known Israeli conductor, was guest conductor at the World Symphony Series, Summer Season 2006 with the KwaZulu Natal Philharmonic Orchestra.  The Season ran from 9 February till 30 March.

 

28 June - 19 July : Israeli Film Festival : Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town

The Israeli Film Festival was once again shown together with Cinema Nouveau screened by Jameson, at Rosebank, Brooklyn and Cavendish Square. 

 

24 - 26 August : Avishai Cohen performing at Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival

Israeli Jazz great, Avishai Cohen performed at the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival during August.   Avishai conducted workshops in Pretoria and Cape Town where he also performed at Swingers Jazz Club in Cape Town during his first SA visit.  All his CD's were completely sold out during this highly successful visit and plans are underway for local music stores to stock more.

AUGUST 2005

Prof. Dan Bahat - (1 - 13 August)

Professor Bahat, one of Israel's leading archaeologists,  has excavated a number of historic sites including Herod's Palace in Jerusalem, the City of David, & the 1,600-foot tunnel which runs under the western retaining wall of the Temple Mount, and he is  considered  the authority on the history and archaeology of the City of Jerusalem.

Professor Bahat gave lectures on various topics in Pretoria, Johannesburg and Cape Town during August 2005. 

 

 

Joy of Jazz - (25 - 27 August)

The Embassy of Israel and tararam are proud to once again be associated with the annual Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival held in Newtown Johannesburg.  Israeli Jazz Musician, Albert Beger performed and did outreach workshops and performances during their visit to South Africa.

  

SEPTEMBER 2005

Rinah Sheleff

Rinah Sheleff is a professional storyteller and movement instructor who hails from Ra'anana, Israel.     Her trip to South Africa in September 2005 was organised jointly by the Embassy of Israel and ‘tararam’, the South Africa / Israel Culture Fund.

Ms Sheleff was delighted to share her wonderful talents with teachers as well as take South African children into the wonderful land of imagination with her expertise in the telling of stories  during her  visit to South Africa.

Rinah gave workshops in storytelling techniques for the classroom teacher, which included methods of memorizing short stories and how to most stimulate the senses of their audiences.

 

MIAGI - 20 September - 3 October

MIAGI (formerly ICMF)  once again  hosted their annual music festival and including the following musicians from Israel :

Boris Rimmer and Yoni Etzion, on cello and violin as well as the Israeli lute player, Habib Hana.  Mr Hana was also be part of a collaboration with Cape Malay musicians in Cape Town.

AVIV QUARTET IN SOUTH AFRICA : JUNE þ2005

Report on their highly successful tour in South Africa.  

Organised concerts were held around the country, including the Linde Auditorium, Unisa, Nederburg, Stellenbosch, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown. Workshops and outreach performances were held, inter alia, in Mamelodi, Soshanguve, and other townships in South Africa.
